On the right-hand side of the rocket launch pad at the end of Turbo Trail, you’ll find a Bot with yellow ears, a tiny bot on its back, and nuts and bolts in its arms alongside a wrench. This references the 2002’s Ratchet & Clank on PS2, developed by Insomniac Games. The wrench refers to Ratchet’s melee weapon, the Omniwrench, while the Bolts refers to the currency in the Ratchet games. After the second use of the Hang Glider, on the left you’ll find a massive sword stuck in the ground.
It is easy to dismiss Astro’s Playroom as a child’s game, given the artistic design; however, it is more than that and can appeal to a larger audience. While it isn’t necessarily hard, some levels are quite challenging. As Astro, players must clear hordes of enemies by spinning toward them or, in some cases, using a gun to get through. Other ways to defeat enemies are by jumping and hovering above them and hitting them with Astro’s lasers.

Astro’s Playroom is a fantastic tech demo game that showcases the capabilities of the DualSense controller. The haptic feedback, motion sensor, and adaptive triggers make a significant difference, and the game successfully demonstrates these features. S8 is enjoyable, featuring four distinct levels that offer unique gameplay experiences. Players can glide into the air, transform into a cannonball and roll their way to the finish line, become a robot monkey, and do some mountain climbing.

Rescuing all the Special Bots not only unlocks the corresponding trophies but also adds them to the CPU Plaza, where they can be admired and interacted with. My favorite of them is GPU Jungle’s full robotic monkey suit, which leads to vertically-scrolling, 2D-view levels. Each of the four worlds in Astro’s Playroom contains at least one Special Bot waiting to be rescued. These bots are often trapped in cages or hidden behind environmental obstacles. Players must carefully explore each area, paying attention to visual cues and environmental hints, to locate the Special Bots and figure out how to free them. These additional trophies add to the overall playtime and enjoyment of Astro’s Playroom, giving players more content to explore and master. Obtaining all the Bronze trophies is not only crucial for unlocking the Platinum but also enhances the overall enjoyment of Astro’s Playroom.
With more levels, Astro Bot’s level design is far richer, giving a lot more room for every move and gadget to stand out. Team Asobi basically took everything they learned in the Playroom and improved it before adding it into Astro Bot (and that doesn’t apply only to level design). Playroom holds up surprisingly well in the graphics department, and you’ll only notice the graphical difference between the two entries if you directly compare them. How much does Astro Bot improve on its foundations from the Playroom?
Around the edge of the main hub area is where you will find the bots from Astro’s Playroom. These will appear automatically once they have been unlocked them; there is no specific importing process or menu screen to go through first. Upon touching the fourth starfish, you’ll come across the special bot, and the clue for the riddle — an arrow following a specific route. From the start, climb the first ledge, and instead of progressing on the critical path to the wall ahead, go through the grass on the left, and you’ll find a Bloodborne bot.
Turn around and run to the start of the bridge to see two bots at the title screen of “Bot of War”. This title screen references 2005’s God of War for the PS2, developed by SIE Santa Monica Studio. Every single PS2 God of War was released in a PS3 collection in 2009, while the PSP duo were in 2011. In the second pink field area you’ll find a large rabbit-like robot jumping over the play area. It holds the Guiness World Record as the first platform video game in true 3D, beating out Super Mario 64 by an entire year.
It’s good when you say other critically acclaimed games aren’t doing it well. That’s not to say all games aren’t doing this, as Returnal and Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 used the controller capabilities to the max. Jump onto the thin ledge behind the tree and head left to the Everybody’s Golf VR easter egg. From here you can jump back down to cloud blowing the rotating platform, with the Piposaru container nearby. To do this, continue through the level until you get to the part where you have to ride on a PS1 / PS1 controller cloud. Instead of jumping left to the next Checkpoint, you should jump up the ledges on the rock wall to get to the top.
